The Mont Chris Hubbard Bonus Show was monthly variety show unlike anything else in Portland. Centered around the self-effacing charm and wit of pianist/singer Mont Chris Hubbard, each show was a grab-bag of musical offerings, from Bach to Bacharach (and back). Often backing up Hubbard were bass and drums, as well as a special guest every show, bringing a new flavor to each month's offering. Mont Chris Hubbard delighted in the beauty and whimsy of art and science, and did his best to impart this delight on the assembled audience, through trivia and games. Nowhere else in town would you have found such a mix of re-imagined pop songs, informational lectures, and melodic audience participation.
Alas, the Bonus Show run came to an end (or, at least, an extended pause) in February 2014. It briefly surfaced for a November 2016 Election Night collaboration with Curious Comedy that ended in tragedy for the country.
Portlanders still pester Mont Chris about bringing the Bonus Show back. Maybe you can be a pesterer too. And if you pester hard enough...
