This CD is the first release in my series of piano improvisations, Permutations of 88. It contains eleven tracks. Each piece was directly inspired by a painting. I sat down at the piano with an image of the painting in front of me, gathered my thoughts, and let the artwork guide my fingers. Listen to three full tracks from this CD (you can stream sections of others here)
The paintings from which I gathered inspiration are:
"Narcissus" (1597-1599) by Caravaggio; "The Bricoleur's Daughter" (1987) by Mark Tansey; "Figures in a Landscape" (1972-73) by Sidney Goodman; "Night Burn" (1986-87) by Sidney Goodman; "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" (1971) by David Hockney; "The Gulf Stream" (1899) by Winslow Homer; "Man Sitting - Back View" (1964) by Wayne Thiebaud; "In the Car" (1963) by Roy Lichtenstein; and "Winter, 1946" (1946) by Andrew Wyeth Note: I am still exploring the copyright issues involved in hosting images of these paintings on my website for you to see, but until that is sorted out, you must find them on your own. Please do — they are wonderful.
This CD was recorded on August 12th, 2008, by Bryan Daste at The Magic Closet, in Portland, Oregon. It was mastered by Erik Ames at SuperDigital, also in Portland, and duplicated there too.
